Google AI Overview tracking

See where your brand lands in Google AI Overview.

Pineprompt runs your real buyer prompts against Google daily, scoped to your country and language, then records whether an AI Overview triggered, every URL it cited, and every competitor it named in the summary panel.

Why AI Overview matters

AI Overview is the new position one.

Google AI Overview is the summary panel that sits on top of the classic search results for qualifying queries. When it appears, it pushes the top organic result below the fold, and the click that used to go to the first blue link now goes to whichever pages the panel cited. Being inside the citation set is, functionally, the new top spot.

The position-zero effect

What the panel does to the rest of the page.

Before AI Overview, the first organic result on a qualifying query owned the click. With AI Overview present, the panel itself owns the answer, and the organic list slides down. Pineprompt records the panel state on every run, so you watch the displacement happen prompt by prompt.

Vrbo and Booking.com dominate listings for entire-home stays, while Airbnb remains the largest single marketplace[1]. For groups, dedicated rental sites typically beat hotel-style platforms on price[2].

Citation rate replaces ranking rate.

The summary cites a handful of domains. Buyers click those domains directly, not the organic list beneath. If your domain is not cited, your traffic from that query collapses.

Mention rate replaces sentiment.

Panel prose is terse and rarely editorializes, so the meaningful signal is whether the panel names you at all, and which competitors it names ahead of you.

What's scored

The three numbers AI Overview tracking turns on.

AI Overview behaves differently from a conversational engine. The panel only appears for some queries, it always cites its sources, and the brands it names inside the prose are not always the same as the domains it cites. Pineprompt tracks all three.

Trigger rate

The percentage of your tracked prompts that actually produced an AI Overview today. A zero-trigger prompt is itself signal: classic SERPs still dominate that query, so traditional SEO still owns the click.

Cited vs named

The signature AI Overview gap. The panel cites your domain as a source for the answer, then names a competitor as the recommendation in the prose. Pineprompt tracks both columns and flags the mismatch.

How AI Overview picks a citation

The two filters every cited URL passes.

AI Overview does not write from the model's own knowledge. It selects a handful of pages from Google's index and summarizes across them, citing each segment back to its source. Two filters decide which pages win a slot. Pineprompt makes both visible, so you see which one your domain is failing.

Filter one: the page already ranks

Pages that already perform well on the classic SERP are disproportionately drawn into the citation pool. Strong organic ranking is a prerequisite for being eligible, though not a guarantee. See citation tracking .

Filter two: the page answers the question

Google then runs a grounding pass on the eligible set and keeps only the pages that cleanly answer the specific question. Schema, recent last-modified dates, and clear question-and-answer structure all move the needle here.

Grounding signals checked

  • Question and answer structure <h2>How do I…</h2><p>…</p>
  • Recent last-modified date Updated this quarter
  • Topical depth Category coverage, not a thin landing page
  • Schema.org markup FAQPage, Product, Article

For a deeper checklist, see the GEO readiness checker .

Slice it the way buyers ask

One AI Overview answer is not a metric.

AI Overview trigger rate and citation behavior shift by prompt, by country, and by who the buyer is comparing you with. Pineprompt slices the same data along each axis, so you find the segment where your visibility breaks.

By country and language

Google rolled AI Overview out in waves by locale, so trigger rate, panel shape, and citation patterns differ market by market. The same prompt triggers a panel in en-US and never fires in fr-FR.

en-GB Panel · 4 citations
fr-FR No panel triggered

By buyer prompt

The same brand dominates one prompt and disappears from the next. Every prompt is tracked on its own, so you find the questions you are losing. See prompt tracking .

Failure modes

Three AI Overview visibility failure modes.

Most AI Overview visibility problems come down to one of these three. Each shows up differently in the data, and each has a different fix.

No panel triggered

Google never shows an AI Overview for this query, so the answer is whatever the classic SERP returns. Fix: standard ranking work still owns this prompt. Track the same query in Pineprompt to know if and when trigger behavior changes.

No AI Overview shown

Wrong page wins the slot

The panel triggered and Google did cite a page from your domain, but it picked a stale or off-brand URL. Fix: publish a fresh, schema-marked page that actually answers the question, then watch the citation move.

Cited URL

airbnb.com/help/article/2014

Last modified: 2019

A fresh category page from your domain would have answered better, but it has not been indexed against this query yet.

Cited last

Your domain is one of the cited sources, but the panel lists it last and pairs it with the smallest summary segment. First-cited domains take the click. Fix: increase the authority and structure of the specific page that ranks for this question.

Google AI Overview tracking FAQ

What people ask before they start tracking AI Overview visibility. For how visibility is scored, see the methodology .

Does Pineprompt see the same AI Overview a buyer sees?
Yes. Pineprompt captures the live AI Overview state, scoped to the same country and language the buyer uses. When the panel does not trigger, Pineprompt records that as a zero, not as missing data.
How is this different from tracking the Gemini app?
AI Overview is a SERP feature triggered only on qualifying queries, tightly constrained in length, and always cites its sources. The Gemini app is a conversational product with longer answers and looser citation behavior. Track both.
Can I track AI Overview by country?
Yes. Every monitor is scoped to a country and language. Google rolled AI Overview out in waves by locale, so trigger rate, panel shape, and citation patterns differ market by market.
What does the cited-but-not-named gap mean?
The summary panel pulled content from your domain to write the answer, yet the prose names a competitor as the recommendation. The signal is that your page is teaching Google about the category but not earning the buyer mention. Citation tracking surfaces every such gap.
How often is each prompt refreshed?
Daily, on every plan. AI answers are stochastic and trigger behavior drifts, so daily density surfaces changes without noise. See our methodology.
How do I earn citations inside AI Overviews?
Pages that already rank well organically are eligible. Of those, the ones that cleanly answer the specific question, with schema markup, recent last-modified dates, and topical depth, win the slot. The GEO readiness checker walks through the checklist.

Buyers do not use one engine.
