What llms.txt is.
llms.txt is a proposed standard, described at llmstxt.org, for a plain markdown file at the root of your site that gives language models a short guide to your most useful pages.
The file starts with an H1 title, usually your site or brand name. A blockquote summary can follow, then optional notes, then H2 sections that each hold a list of links in the form - [Name](https://example.com/page): what it covers.
The standard is a proposal, not a requirement. Support among AI platforms is uneven and none of them has promised to use the file, so treat it as a low-cost way to describe your site clearly, not as a guaranteed route into AI answers. A file that follows the format is at least easy for any tool to parse.
What each check means.
Each result is a pass, a warning, or a fail. Fails break the format. Warnings are things to improve.
- H1 title comes first
- The format requires one H1 as the first line. A missing or misplaced title fails; extra H1 headings warn.
- Blockquote summary
- A short "> summary" line after the title tells a model what the site is. It is optional, so a missing one warns.
- H2 sections
- Sections group your links, for example Docs or Products. A file with no H2 sections warns.
- Link lists
- Links belong in list items shaped like "- [name](url): notes". List items in another shape warn.
- Markdown links are well formed
- Catches syntax slips such as a space between the brackets and the parenthesis, an empty URL, or a missing closing bracket. These fail.
- Absolute URLs
- The file is read outside your site, so links should be full https URLs. Relative paths warn.
- No duplicate links
- Listing the same URL twice wastes space. Duplicates warn.
- Optional section
- A section named Optional marks links a tool can skip when it has little room. It is never required.
