Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

Answer engine optimization is the practice of preparing content so search engines and AI systems use it to answer a question directly, rather than simply ranking it in a list.

AEO and GEO, close cousins

AEO predates GEO. The term was coined when featured snippets and voice assistants were the main direct-answer surfaces. It has since expanded to cover Google AI Overview, Google AI Mode, and conversational engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity.

GEO is the newer, narrower discipline focused on generative AI answers. AEO is the umbrella. The same signals that won featured snippets in 2020, including clear question-form headings, crisp definitions, and FAQ markup, now help earn citations inside AI Overview in 2026. Some teams use the two terms interchangeably.

  2. Multi-engine coverage. AEO work is judged by eight different systems, each with its own ranking quirks. Treat Google AI Overview, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Perplexity as separate ranking surfaces.
  3. Conversational follow-ups count. Google AI Mode and Perplexity users drill down. You need strong answers on the second and third prompts, not just the first.
