What the three numbers mean.
Each one answers a different question about how often AI assistants name you.
Share of voice is your mentions divided by the total mentions of every brand in the table. It shows how much of the conversation you own against the competitors you listed. It always sums to 100% across brands, so it depends on who you include.
Mention rate is your mentions divided by the number of answers you tracked (N). It does not depend on competitors. It is the share of answers where you appear at all.
Weighted share rewards being named earlier. Each brand scores mentions divided by its average position, so a brand at position 1 counts fully and one at position 4 counts a quarter. Scores are then divided by the sum of all scores. Position is the order in which a brand appears in an answer's list of brands.
How to collect the numbers by hand.
You need a fixed prompt list and a consistent way of counting.
Pick your prompts
Write 20 to 50 questions your buyers ask, such as "best CRM for small agencies". Keep the list fixed so results are comparable over time.
Run each one per engine
Ask every prompt in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and the others in a fresh session. Each answer counts toward N.
Tally mentions and position
For each brand, count the answers that name it. Optionally note where it appears in the list and average those positions.
AI answers vary from run to run, so a single pass is a snapshot, not a trend. Repeat it on a schedule, or let prompt tracking do it for you.
