In one sentence
Google AI Overview is the AI summary at the top of a Google search results page, generated by Gemini and cited from the sources it retrieved.
How it works
When a user searches Google, the system decides whether the query qualifies for an AI Overview. Informational, commercial-investigation, how-to, comparison, travel, and health queries qualify more often than navigational ones.
On qualifying queries, Gemini retrieves a small set of pages from Google's index, writes a short summary, and displays it above the organic results with a collapsible list of cited URLs. The summary is a distinct surface from the standalone Google Gemini app and from Google AI Mode. Same model family, different UI, different ranking behavior.
Why it matters
Google reported more than 2.5 billion monthly users of AI Overview at Google I/O 2026. Ahrefs' February 2026 study found a 58% lower click-through rate at organic position one when an AI Overview is present. Coverage on US desktop was around a quarter of tracked queries in early 2026.
The practical effect is that on queries where an AI Overview appears, being cited inside it matters more than ranking first below it. The Overview often pushes the top organic result below the fold.
