Citation Rate

The share of tracked AI answers that cite at least one URL from your domain as a source.

In one sentence

Citation rate is the percentage of tracked AI answers that cite at least one URL from your domain as a source.

What it means

Citation rate depends on the platform. Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode show sources routinely. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and others show them when they search the web, and often do not when they answer from training data. Compare rates within a platform, not across them.

A low citation rate with a high mention rate usually means the model knows you but is pulling facts from other sites. A high citation rate with few mentions means your pages are used as reference material while competitors get named.

What to do about it

List the URLs that are cited for your key prompts and the domains that are cited instead of yours. Pages that answer one question clearly, with dated facts and structured data, tend to be easier to use as sources. Review which third-party sites dominate and consider whether coverage there is realistic.

How Pineprompt measures it

Pineprompt stores every cited URL per answer, so you can see citation rate for your domain and for competitors, and which pages earn it. See citation tracking.
