Prompt Tracking

Running a fixed set of buyer prompts against AI platforms on a schedule and recording how brands appear in the answers.

In one sentence

Prompt tracking is running a fixed set of buyer prompts against AI platforms on a schedule and recording which brands, positions, sentiments and sources appear in the answers.

What it means

It is the AI-search counterpart of rank tracking. Because answers vary from run to run (answer volatility), the method matters: the same prompts, the same wording, repeated on a schedule, on each platform separately.

A useful set mixes branded and non-branded prompts, covers each product line and buying stage, and is reviewed by a person. Too few prompts gives noisy results. Too many low-value prompts dilutes them.

What to do about it

Start with the questions customers really ask. Use the prompt fan-out generator to widen a seed topic, then prune. Keep the set stable so trends are comparable, and add prompts deliberately.

Review the set every quarter. Retire prompts that no longer reflect how customers ask, and record the date of each change so that a shift in the numbers can be explained.
