In one sentence
Source attribution is how an AI answer credits the pages or publishers behind its claims, through inline links, footnotes, source cards, or named references in the text.
What it means
Attribution varies a lot between products. Some place numbered citations after each claim. Some list sources beside the answer. Some name a publisher in the text and give no link. Some give nothing, especially when answering from training data.
Attribution is also imperfect. A cited page may only loosely support the claim next to it, and a claim can be drawn from a page that is not cited. That is why a citation is evidence of use, not proof of endorsement.
What to do about it
Make your key facts easy to attribute: one clear claim per section, a visible date, and an author or organization name. Use consistent naming so that a text-only attribution names you correctly. Check periodically that cited pages say what the answer says they do.
How Pineprompt measures it
Pineprompt captures the sources each platform returns with an answer and any publisher named in the text, and reports them as citations by domain and URL. See citation tracking.
