In one sentence
Branded prompts name your company or product. Non-branded prompts describe a need or category without naming any vendor, so the AI has to choose whom to mention.
What it means
"Is Acme any good?" is branded. "Best project tools for small agencies" is non-branded. On branded prompts you will nearly always be mentioned, so the useful signal is sentiment and accuracy. On non-branded prompts, mention is earned, and that is where new customers are found.
Mixing the two in one average hides the picture. A strong branded rate can mask near-zero visibility for the category.
What to do about it
Report the two groups separately. Put most of your effort into non-branded prompts for the categories, use cases and comparisons your buyers ask about, and keep a small branded set to monitor reputation and hallucinations.
A third group is worth adding: competitor-branded prompts such as "alternatives to Competitor X". They show whether you are considered when a buyer is already leaving someone else. Review the split monthly so the branded set does not quietly grow into the majority.
