Mention vs Citation

A mention names your brand in the answer text. A citation links to a URL as a source. They are different signals.

In one sentence

A mention is your brand named in the text of an AI answer. A citation is a URL from your site listed as a source. An answer can have either, both, or neither.

What it means

Four combinations occur. Mentioned and cited: the best case. Mentioned only: the model knows you, but draws facts elsewhere. Cited only: your content is used and a competitor gets the credit. Neither: you are absent.

Each points to different work. Mention-only suggests strengthening your own pages so they become the source. Cited-only suggests clearer naming and positioning on those pages, so the brand is carried into the answer.

What to do about it

Break your tracked prompts into the four groups and pick the group with the most commercial value first. Compare rates using brand mention rate and citation rate.

Some platforms rarely show sources in certain modes, so cited-only and neither cannot be told apart there. Note which platforms can show each combination before comparing them. Revisit the split after any big content change.

How Pineprompt measures it

Pineprompt records mentions and citations separately for each answer, so all four combinations can be counted. See brand mention tracking and citation tracking.
