What it means
Many buyer prompts return a list. Being named first is not the same as being named fifth, since readers give more attention to earlier items. There is no ranking algorithm to inspect, and order can change between runs, so position is best read as an average over many runs.
Order is not always a ranking. Some answers list alphabetically or by category. Read the answer to see whether order carries meaning before treating position as a score.
What to do about it
Track average position for your main non-branded prompts alongside mention rate. If you are mentioned but consistently low, compare with the brands above you: what do the cited sources say about them that they do not say about you?
Remember that some answers name only one brand. In those, position is simply first or absent, and the fight is over the single slot.
