Answer Volatility

How much an AI answer changes between runs of the same prompt, in wording, brands named, and sources cited.

In one sentence

Answer volatility is how much an AI answer changes between repeated runs of the same prompt, in its wording, the brands it names and the sources it cites.

What it means

AI answers are generated, not looked up. Ask twice and you can get different lists. Retrieval results, model updates, personalization and location all add variation. A single check therefore tells you very little.

Volatility differs by prompt. Some questions return the same three brands nearly every time. Others rotate a wide pool. The second kind means you are competing for a slot that is not settled.

What to do about it

Never judge a change from one run. Compare averages over repeated runs and over weeks. Treat a prompt with high volatility as an opportunity, since positions there are not locked in, and a prompt with stable answers as a harder target that needs stronger evidence to displace.

Report ranges alongside averages when you share results. A stakeholder who sees "first in 3 of 10 runs" understands the situation better than one who sees a single position.

How Pineprompt measures it

Pineprompt runs each prompt daily, so results are time series and not snapshots, and the trend shows real movement apart from run-to-run noise. See the methodology.
