In one sentence
Brand mention rate is the percentage of tracked AI answers that name your brand, counted whether or not the answer links to your site.
What it means
If you track 50 prompts and your brand is named in 20 of the answers, your mention rate is 40 percent. The rate is per platform and per time period, and it only means something against a fixed prompt set.
A mention is different from a citation. An answer can recommend you by name without linking to you, and it can link to your page without naming you. See mention vs citation. Mention rate is the closer proxy for brand awareness. Citation rate is the closer proxy for content authority.
What to do about it
Read mention rate by prompt type. A high rate on branded prompts is expected and says little. The useful number is the rate on non-branded prompts, where the buyer has not yet chosen anyone. Expect it to move between runs because of answer volatility, so judge trends over weeks.
How Pineprompt measures it
Pineprompt records a mention whenever your brand or a configured alias appears in the answer text, per prompt, per platform, per day. See brand mention tracking.
